The sibling thing is special, touching, wonderful, and *tough*. There are moments of sweetness and mutual play, but don't let all the cute, smiling photos of these two fool you. These kind moments are followed by interludes of them yelling at, poking, ignoring, and rejecting each other. The fighting and bickering is super annoying. I'm starting to read "Siblings Without Rivalry," but beyond that, we don't really know what to do. The interactions seem generally normal, but it doesn't make them any easier to stomach. And I realize all this will definitely get worse as they get older. It is made possible by how intimately they know each other (read: they know the perfect strategies to really, really irritate each other).
My hope for them is that they get in the habit of kindness and compassion. My hope is that they realize sooner rather than later that they are each other's best, most dependable, ally and friend. And I think a lot of that is rooted in habitual behavior. I can only continue to remind them that they are a team unto themselves and hope that they are aware enough to take it from there.
Carl, if you're out there, I'm glad that you're my best, most dependable, ally and friend.
