The Kingdom

We're just getting back from a 5-day trip to the Northeast Kingdom in Vermont. We spent the time biking and camping around the region with our friends and travel partners, Jay and Caroline. Four years ago, the four of us (plus two other important peeps) explored the Enchantments, near Leavenworth, Washington. Two years ago, we paddled in Quetico Provincial Park. And this year, we biked!

Kyle and I left Madison and drove to Elkhart, where Sylvie got to spend a week with Mor Mor and Pops. We stayed long enough to hang out and put her to bed, then we got back in the car and drove to Vermont.

Our trip started off in Danville, at the home of Ted and Susan Houle, parents of my friend Libby. They graciously took us in and helped us enormously with choosing our route, finding campgrounds and getting our bearings. Plus, they fed us homemade bread, let us swing on the rope swing in their barn and set up our bikes/panniers in their driveway. They figured into our trip throughout, but their warm welcome for us in Danville was a great way to start the trip.

First day on the bikes: Danville to Elmore State Park (~32 miles, mostly paved, aside from one long, steep, gravel uphill to Elmore.) We were happy to be riding and our legs were fresh. The weather was perfect (80's and sunny). Great lean-to campsite in Elmore, good swimming at Lake Elmore.

  1. Elmore State Park!! So fun to hear about this journey, and that you visited some of my childhood haunts!
