Winter Park

We went to Winter Park for the weekend with our friends Abby and Clancey and their kids Lucy and Baby Will. Stayed in a fabulous VRBO house and mountain biked every day!

Kyle and I were just happy to be somewhere with moisture in the air and soil. It made for forests that reminded us of the Northwest.

Abby and I biked together while Clancey and Kyle stayed with the kids, and then we switched. We both did a loop including the Tipperary Creek Trail, that was a beautiful single-track climb and descent. Abby and I got caught in a major lightning storm on our first ride, and were rescued by a kind passer-by who gave us a ride back to our car.

Mountain biking is so much fun! While I still love riding a road bike, there is something rejuvenating about riding through the forest on a bouncy bike with big tires. It feels like playing. I have had some big falls on my bike in the woods, but I am loving the chance to get better at this sport. So far, both Kyle and I are decent climbers, but we are both more cautious on the downhills. I find that my mind plays one mantra over and over when I'm rolling down a mountain, gaining speed -- "my babies need a mother, my babies need a mother, my babies need a mother." That keeps me relatively in control on the trail.

As much as we hem and haw about Colorado and how it doesn't yet feel like home, I can't deny that it's a beautiful place. I do love exploring here. Winter Park seems like a good destination for us because it's only about 1.25 hours from our house (assuming we can master the art of avoiding the standstill infuriating traffic on I-70 during the Sunday return drive).
Baby Will was three months old, cute as could be, and just learning to smile (while also spitting up).

Sylvie did her first performance for us in Winter Park. It was called "Spinning Towels" and she was a performer named Nut Lion who crawled around with towels in her mouth, then spun around. Very avant garde.

We got it together one night to have a proper meal outside on the deck, overlooking two rushing creeks that made for natural white noise machines.
