Kombucha Revolution

After being given a SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) by a friend, I have officially started brewing kombucha! I have brewed about five batches (each batch takes 1-2 weeks to ferment), and it's been so fun to learn about the process. I wasn't even a kombucha drinker before the mother culture fell into my lap, but I do love a good DIY project.

I've been using these two books as guides:

This endeavor coincides with my participation in something called the Whole Life Challenge, which means that I joined a team of Seattle friends to track (and try to improve) the food we eat, the amount we sleep, the amount of water we drink, the exercise we do, time spent without technology, and time spent stretching. It's a 60-day challenge, and has been fun/challenging so far. Most difficult during the times that we go out of town and I have less control over the food that I eat. Also most difficult after I put the kids to bed and generally crave refined sugar.

  1. You haven't asked my opinion, Ann, but I feel compelled to send a word of caution about this. There are no proven health benefits to the use of Kombucha, but serious side effects have been reported, even fatalities. I'd suggest caution.
