This past weekend was notable in its ordinariness. We hung around home, didn't have anything planned, kept things very low-key, and ended up really enjoying ourselves. We went for bike rides, did some pumpkin carving, and played with neighbors.
Sylvie had Friday off from school, so I took the kids to the zoo in the morning. They've set up a bunch of fairy houses throughout the zoo and they were such fun to discover. In the spirit of keeping it real, I'll admit that the zoo visit was a hit until we had to stop in to the gift shop at the end, where everything fell apart when I refused to buy anything. [That part was frustrating for me too: It was about the experience, not about buying more stuff! How to make my kid more grateful, less entitled??] But otherwise, good times.
Sylvie misses her friend Stella, who moved to Columbus this summer. This is a letter that she sent to Stella, along with a school picture.
We went for a hike up South Table Mountain in Golden. The weather was *awesome*. The hike was remarkable because Sylvie was excited and energetic throughout the entire experience. There. Was. No. Whining. It was amazing and so much fun. I still carry Sam on my back for 95% of the hiking. He's happy there. Bodhi was with us too, though you can't see him in the picture.
At night, I hung up some posters that I got from an SF artist. I believe in their message, and I like that they make voting and its impact personal. The posters are taken down soon after I put them up, but I hope they're catching some eyes here and there. It feels like important work with this unbelievable election coming up.
I also took the kids to get season rentals for downhill skis. Sam will be wearing the smallest boots available!
